Dog walking for We Love Pets

Are you a dog lover who would jump at the chance to spend time with more dogs? Perhaps you have another part-time job or work from home? If you're looking to get out and about (and paid) to walk your local area with a canine friend or two then dog walking is just for you.

How does dog walking work?

Collect two doggie friends, usually from different homes (most dogs are paired with a play pal but we don’t do pack walking) and drive them to the local park for playtime, exercise, sniffing time and a few treats. Drop the dogs back, check them over and towel down if wet. Give the dogs some fresh water and leave a nice note for the owners or send them a text. Out again for the next dog walk...

What does dog walking involve?

Dog walking is a very responsible and rewarding job which requires your commitment to look after a customer's dog as if they were your own while they are in your care.

You will...

  • Pick up and drop off dogs from their homes whilst ensuring the security of customers’ homes
  • Transport dogs safely to and from their walks and homes in your own vehicle
  • Understand special requests and specific conditions for each dog
  • Walk dogs outdoors in all weather conditions (anywhere from 20 to 60 minutes at a time)
  • Give each dog love and attention
  • Ensure each dog is getting plenty of exercise and a toilet break
  • Ensure the safety of the dogs you are walking and anyone else around them
  • Remove pet waste
  • Take photos of the dogs for their owners and update them regularly
  • Give fresh water, wipe paws and towel wet dogs down
  • Communicate with clients, including arranging visits with new customers
  • Ensure schedules are up to date each week

We welcome job applications from everyone, but dog walking is especially suited to:

  • People who work another part-time job
  • Someone who works from home and wants some fresh air at lunchtime
  • Someone who has their own business and wants to get out of the house for a few hours in the day
  • Parents with children at nursery or school
  • Semi-retired or retired people

Case study

Anabelle from our Marlborough branch

Anabelle has been a We Love Pets dog walker since 2015 for our Hungerford and Marlborough team.

Wet weather isn’t a concern for Anabelle after some fabulously exciting work in the past as a geologist.

"Just make sure you always have a full set of waterproofs and dress for all weathers - you will get wet, but you'll soon get used to it if you're not already."

Dogs are a sure way to attract everyone’s attention, so unless you go off the beaten track every walk, you’re guaranteed to get some lovely comments and smiles from the general public.

"I was enjoying a walk with my own dog, Cassine (German Shepherd) and a regular, Ruby who’s a Rottweiler, when someone shouted from a van ‘Blimey no one’s going to mug you with those two’ – I wasn’t going to disagree, but as we only ever walk non-aggressive dogs, it was funny!"

Anabelle’s average day is around 2.5-4 hours long working for We Love Pets, so she’s able to combine it with her love for the outdoors and spending time horse riding and gardening, which probably explains why she’s more than happy being outdoors every day.

"Dog walking could be lonely if you’re not used to time on your own, but our branch managers make sure there are regular occasions to meet up socially, and you’ll also work closely with colleagues during handovers, exchanging keys and it’s inevitable you’ll bump into each other when out with the dogs".

We asked Anabelle what skills she thinks a prospective dog walker would need, other than loving pets:

"Great organisational skills, so you can arrive to your destination when expected and pass on important details between dog walkers, for periods of cover during holidays."
